Vista client using RWW to a Windows 2000 Terminal Server

June 28, 2007

Ran into a little quirk with a Windows Vista client that was connecting to a Windows 2000 terminal server through Remote Web Workplace. The Vista client kept getting an error that “The remote computer disconnected the session because of an error in the licensing protocol. Please try connecting to the remote computer again or contact your server administrator.” No errors showed up on the terminal server or on the SBS box (which runs the licensing server.)

Error Message

After some digging around found the solution. Because of the security setting of IE 7 on Vista, you need to add the RWW site to the Trusted Sites in Internet Explorer in order for it to allow the connection. Not sure why the error message says what it does as it really doesn’t seem to point to the actual problem!

What do you do?

June 27, 2007

For those of you trying to market your companies & attract new business, here’s something to consider. I was at Hitec yesterday at the Orlando convention center, there were a lot of vendors with all the booths setup, tons of swag, etc. Something I noticed however is that about half of them didn’t say anywhere What They Do!

If the name of your company is “Web Site Design by Bob” this probably doesn’t apply to you but otherwise, if someone looks at your web site or business card can they get some idea of what you do in about 5 seconds? While walking the isles that’s about how much time I spent looking at a booth/banner to figure out what they do and if it was worth my time to stop and talk to them.

Just something to consider the next time you’re updating your web sites/business cards/flyers/etc. Make sure that people who you’ve never talked to can get some idea as to what you do!
